Gas project Groningen

Of all the money the Dutch government receives, 10% is pumped out of the ground in the province Groningen. Since the 1959 a big company called NAM, is pumping gas in the area of Slochteren. Researchers found out that the gas bubble is drained to 40% of its volume and that gas drilling produces more earthquakes in the area. The effects of the earthquakes have a lot of consequences to the houses in the surrounding areas.
On this subject there are two sides of the story. One is the state relies of the profit of gas but on the other hand the safety and the economic value of the resident houses in that area are in danger.
We as designers felt the need to look at this social problem and try to find a solution.
After, investigation on the subject we had to conclude that in our views as designers the damaged caused by earthquakes are not visible enough to the outside world.
We think that the NAM and the government are lacking empathy for the residents in the gas drilling area. Every individual valuator of the NAM has his own view on the valuation of a house. These evaluators work for the NAM Company and are therefore not completely unbiased.
With the words empathy and transparency we came up with an open platform website. It’s an open platform where people with their damaged houses can showcase their house to the society. Within their own webpage the people could open slots for other companies to valuate their houses. After the valuation of the houses the people can upload the taxations and show a more real valuation of their homes. People are able to review the valuators who were part of their valuation.
This project was in collaboration with Jiawei van Kleef. In a time span of 5 months we worked each week on this subject in our graphic design classes. The two of us were responsible for the research, vision, and the concept as an answer for this social problem.
